Lifts and cranes play a critical role in creating a safe and ergonomic environment for facilities. Designed to minimize manual lifting and reduce workplace injuries, these automation solutions make it easier to move heavy loads with efficiency. From ergonomic lifting to integrated fall protection, these material handling solutions come in a variety of configurations and types to create safer work environments.
As a trusted Gorbel partner, ISS provides design and installation of crane technology, ergonomic lifting, and fall protection. Gorbel’s innovative designs include lifting devices and fall protection systems. There are five common styles of crane solutions that ISS can design and install to make the most of your available space: Workstation Bridge Cranes, Jib Cranes, Top Riding Cranes, Underhung Cranes, and Gantry Cranes.
What are the Benefits of Lift & Crane Solutions?
Lift and crane solutions offer a safe and reliable way to move heavy loads. Here are the main benefits of crane and lift solutions.
- Safety – these material handling solutions allow workers to move heavy items without putting strain on themselves. These automation solutions move material with precision, ensuring items end up where they need to be placed.
- Efficiency – lift and crane solutions make moving items quicker and more efficient. With a reliable way to move items, downtime is reduced, improving the flow of material.
- Ergonomics – with a solution to move heavy items, it takes the heavy lifting off workers, allowing them to move material without putting strain on themselves.
What Are the Different Types of Crane Solutions?
Workstation Bridge Crane Solutions
Workstation cranes feature an overhead lifting system that comes in a bridge or monorail design depending on the type of direction needed to move. Here’s some quick info about workstation cranes.
- Can handle standard capacities up to 4,000 lbs
- Workstation Bridge cranes move material in a rectangular pattern
- Workstation monorail systems move along a linear X direction
Jib Cranes
These cranes feature a horizontal arm that is connected to a vertical support or wall. Jib cranes can come freestanding, wall-mounted, articulating, or in a mast design.
- Moves in semi or full circles
- More compact than other models – saves floor space and can be used in smaller facilities
Top Riding Crane
This type of crane is an overhead crane and the crane is secured to the top of structural runway beams.
- Uses vertical space and allows for maximum hook height
- Comes with single girder or double girder bridge design
- Girders have end trucks attached to the ends
- Control panel is used to drive the end truck down the runway
Underhung Crane
This crane is an overhead crane that is suspended from runway beams (rather than riding on top of them). These are best for facilities that don’t have the clear height for a top riding crane.
- Suited for facilities that don’t have a clear height to allow for a top riding crane
- Free standing versions available
- Come in single girder or double girder bridge design
Gantry Crane
A gantry crane uses a self-supporting frame to hold up the lifting portion of the crane.
- Can be used for indoor and outdoor environments
- Stationary and portable options available
- Girder is supported by freestanding legs
Project Spotlight: Crane Solution
Challenge: A defense contractor reached out to our automation division, ISS Material Handling with a need for a new setup. This company was currently using a crane to move their test equipment, but it was not rated high enough to support the new equipment they had on the way.
Solution: To support this new equipment, a Gorbel gantry crane with a motorized hoist was designed and installed. This solution would support the positioning of this equipment with precision and ease. As the crane was designed to be on casters, this solution was designed to move around, allowing for easy repositioning.
Results: Now, this end user now has an efficient solution that allows them to move their equipment with precision and ease, allowing for a safe and efficient material handling solution.
