One of our recent projects is a prime example of how storage can balance space with safety. This company was in need of a unique setup as their storage needed to accommodate all of their inventory in the space available. This project features a Steel King pallet racking system, designed to integrate seamlessly with other solutions while enhancing safety in a seismic zone. This storage setup demonstrates how powerful pallet racking can be when used to maximize clear height, creating even more space without compromising safety.

Solutions

In this local gas company, pallet racking was strategically designed and installed throughout the warehouse to make the most of the space.

In this particular area, we focused on using the clear height, creating two different types of storage. This design allowed this company to store items on both tiers, with bolt bins on the ground and replenishment inventory for those bins on the shelves above. We also left the top beam open for when they need to overstock replenishment inventory when they know they’ll have a big run on particular part numbers. The Steel King pallet racking setup optimizes the space available and leaves room for growth.

In addition to this setup, we designed and installed Steel King pallet rack along the edge of the wall. This design was needed for the company to be able to store larger boxes, using the clear height of the building to maximize the vertical space.

Similar to the other pallet rack setup, we were able to maximize the clear height and use the space below to integrate another storage solution into the space. Racking for long metal pipes was added beneath the pallet racking, again seamlessly fitting beneath the racking as to not use more floor space.

This warehouse specifically was located in a seismic zone, meaning we had to add extra precautions to the pallet racking to keep things secure. Steel King pallet racking is great for this, so we installed 5×7 base plates, larger than the standard size. Then, for extra impact resistance, Steel King comes standard with heavy duty uprights that had closed tube columns, which offers 250% more frontal impact strength compared to comparable open-back column design. To secure the racking units into the concrete floor, 2 anchors per footplate were installed as well as concrete wedge anchors. To ensure everything was level, baseplate shims were used. This racking is now prepared in the event of seismic activity.

Results

The finished storage solution for this warehouse not only maximized the space available but also provided this company with a safe, and efficient storage setup. By being able to combine the Steel King pallet racking with bolt bins and additional racking, we delivered a custom solution that met this company’s needs.
