Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRCs) are automation solutions that are designed to transport items between levels in a facility. These provide a safe and efficient way for material movement. VRCs typically only carry inventory, but Wildeck offers a rideable material lift, which allows these to have different qualifications than freight elevators.
VRCs are a safe, cost-effective solution that improves material flow while making better use of vertical space. Often paired with mezzanines, these material handling solutions offer an ergonomic way to move heavy or bulky material, taking the strain off workers.

What are the Benefits of Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors?
These material handling solutions are commonly used when workers need to transport heavy or bulky items from floor to floor.
- Safety – these solutions take the heavy lifting off workers. Instead of transporting items via stairs, heavy items can be placed on the platform, locked in, and then moved up or down. The worker can then meet the inventory at the right level and unload.
- Efficiency – by having a system in place that safely moves material up and down, slowdowns are minimal. This requires less labor and ensures you have a reliable way to move inventory in your facility.
- Easy to Integrate – with freight elevators, there are more requirements as these move material and people while VRCs just move material. These can also easily be integrated with mezzanines, supported catwalk systems, rack systems, and other elevated storage areas.
Project Spotlight: Integrating a Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor into a Parts Department
Streamlined Automotive Storage System for a Ford ProShop Dealership
Challenge: A Missouri dealership needed a strategic automotive parts department where their team could quickly and safely access items while being able to have a high storage capacity. They wanted to store their bulkier, slower moving items such as hoods, bumpers, and doors on the second level storage platform, but didn’t want to move them up to the second level using a forklift.
Solution: This automotive parts department needed a high-density storage solution and had the perfect clear height for a mezzanine. The VRC allowed them to hand load or pallet jack items onto the VRC platform, and have it take the inventory to the second level without the need of a forklift. This allowed them to move those heavy, bulky items to the second floor and keep the main level for their “A” fast moving items.
Results: Having a VRC allowed them to accomplish their goal of having a well-rounded setup where they could move material around their facility with ease.

If your application requires personnel to travel alongside your materials, Wildeck offers a rideable lift solution. The Wildeck RiderLift gives facilities another option when evaluating how to safely move both people and product between levels.
The RiderLift allows one authorized person to ride with the material and includes controls inside the carriage so the rider can control movement.

Discover More About VRCsVRC FAQs: Common Questions About Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor Uses, Installation, and Capabilities
How do I know if a vertical reciprocating conveyor is right for my facility?
A VRC is right for your facility if you have different levels that your inventory needs to move between. These help make use of your vertical space and can be right for your facility if you want to take the heavy load off your workers.
Can vertical reciprocating conveyors be customized for different applications?
Yes, VRCs can be customized to accommodate different load sizes, weights, heights, and layouts. The size of the VRC can be designed to fit for the application need.
Can a vertical reciprocating conveyor serve more than two levels?
Yes, VRCs can be designed to move between multiple levels in a facility. The height of the VRC can be customized to how many levels you have. We have installed multiple 3 and 4 level VRCs!
Where can a VRC be installed within a facility?
VRCs can be installed in a variety of locations and are mostly commonly paired with mezzanines and upper floors.
What information is needed to choose the right VRC?
Choosing the right VRC starts with understanding the movement in your facility. Considerations should include the size and weight of the load, carriage size, vertical travel distance, number of levels and how the materials will be loaded and unloaded.
