From Floor Space to Functionality: Free Standing Mezzanine, Wire Partition, and Pallet Racking for a Heavy-Duty Truck Dealer

Challenge

When a heavy-duty truck dealer group needed help outfitting their new facility, we were excited to get started. Over the years, we’ve partnered with this truck dealer group on storage solutions, allowing us the former insight on how their operations run, inventory requirements, and the need for efficiency. While each facility has had its own unique challenges, the need for an organized and streamlined storage solution has remained consistent, so we knew what we were aiming for.

This project presented an exciting opportunity as this truck dealer group had just acquired a new facility, which meant starting with a clean slate. With a need for a complete storage strategy, we worked closely with the truck group to create a customized mix of storage solutions.

Drawing on our experience designing storage solutions for this truck group, we worked with the customer to develop a mix of warehouse pallet racking, Rousseau drawers and shelving, WireCrafters wire partition, and other heavy duty shelving to support their daily operations. The goal was to design a facility that would meet their storage needs and provide them with the flexibility for growth.

Solution

To begin any successful project, we first have to assess the goals of the operations. Before recommending solutions, we take a look at how much inventory a facility will have and how often they want to access those items. For this project, our St. Louis automotive storage expert, Mike Croker, worked with this truck center team to determine their needs, day to day operations, and ideal workflow, so that he could design the most efficient storage solution.

After understanding this heavy-duty truck center’s needs, it became clear that they needed a solution that would maximize their available space. With ample clear height, this facility had the space for a free standing mezzanine. By creating a second level, this dealership could double that usable storage area in that section of their facility.

On top of the mezzanine, this truck center had the space for storage boxes and other miscellaneous items that wouldn’t need to be picked as often as the storage below.

Underneath the mezzanine, we designed heavy duty shelf storage to holder smaller parts and smaller boxes. This included drawers in shelving from Rousseau that were designed in a bright red color, just one of the 20 color offerings from Rousseau. This red color from Rousseau is used across all of their facilities to keep a cohesive and branded look.

With drawers that can slide out for 100% access, this team will be able to store small parts and keep things neatly organized to be able to find easily. Above the drawers is open shelving, which allows this team to have space for miscellaneous items such as bottles, boxes, and more. This shelving also included metal pegboards on the side to hang items like clipboards for documents.

In another area of this facility, the dealership needed dedicated space for larger inventory items and oversized truck components. To accommodate this inventory, we designed and installed industrial pallet racks customized to the space available. Truck parts can vary in size and weight, so having a storage solution that can support large capacities while also keeping items accessible was a necessity. Industrial pallet racking offered this truck center a good mix of durability, organization, and flexibility, allowing them to still maximize their space.

Positioned at the ends of the warehouse pallet racking aisles, cantilever rack provided storage for all their long, bulky materials. Items that don’t fit on the pallet racking that may be oversized like leaf springs or difficult to organize can now benefit from being stored on cantilever rack. This racking system features an open front design that makes loading and unloading simple while keeping items organized.

To tie all of these storage solutions together and add a layer of security, ISS incorporated a WireCrafters wire partition system around the storage area. With many moving parts and valuable inventory, it was important to create a secure solution that will control access. The wire partition will provide a separation, removing disruptions and unauthorized personnel from the work space. With the wire mesh, there’s still enough visibility to monitor what’s happening throughout the day.

Results

With their new storage system in place, this heavy-duty truck center is able to start their operations with a cohesive, organized, and efficient workflow. From small parts to oversized components, all their inventory has a place to live in their facility. By combining a mezzanine, warehouse pallet racks, cantilever rack, wire partitions, and warehouse shelving systems, ISS was able to create a comprehensive storage solution.
